In 1987, Boermarke was the first in the Netherlands to make farmhouse ice cream from milk from its own farm. In addition to various types of ice cream, Boermarke mousse made from fresh farm milk quickly became very popular. In the beginning, Boermarke mainly sold its products to dairy farms throughout the Netherlands. But because Boermarke only used natural ingredients, other sectors also began to show interest. Due to rapid changes in the market, Boermarke subsequently also started producing plant-based products. This was a groundbreaking decision, which gave retail sales an absolute boost.

Start

Boermarke was the first company in the Netherlands to make Boerenroomijs (traditional farmer’s ice cream) using milk from its own farm. Thanks to the use of purely natural ingredients, sales quickly expanded from dairy farms to the institutional sector.

1987

First award

With the organic ice cream Bertha 1, Boermarke won the ABN AMRO award at the World Trade Show in Amsterdam — a prestigious export prize that opened the door to the German market. Also in 1996, the facility in Enschede was fully renovated and expanded.

1996

New Location in Hengelo

Boermarke purchased a promising new facility in Hengelo because the growing product range meant the production site in Enschede had become too small.

1999

Enschede & Hengelo

From 2000, all fresh production took place in Hengelo, while Enschede remained home base for frozen production.

2000

New Building Enschede

Due to strong growth, Boermarke moved at the end of 2008 to a completely new building in Enschede-West.

2008

International Expansion

Boermarke significantly expanded its presence abroad starting in 2009.

2009

Plant-based Production Begins

Boermarke began producing plant-based yoghurts and desserts.

2015

Vegan & Acquisition

Plant-based production grew substantially. Additionally, in 2019 Boermarke acquired De Zuivelmakers and started production of several private label products in ice cream and fresh categories (e.g., for Airline, IKEA, McDonald’s, and private label ice cream tubs).

2019

100% Plant-based

In 2023, Boermarke announced its full transition to 100% plant-based production. The dairy division will be taken over by Zuivelhoeve in the coming years.

2023

European Retail Expansion

By 2025, Boermarke’s plant-based private label products are available in supermarkets in no fewer than 21 European countries.
